I have recently discovered this forum: Mgmaps where the provide information for those interested to download and store maps for use in their GPS application. These include maps from GoogleMaps and Googlearth (satellite images).

They also provide tools (e.g. gMapMaker) for downloading and merging map tiles as well as calibrating and building poster-like images and OziExplorer .map files.
