N95 camera red light deactivation [+8GB]

By |2017-12-04T22:07:33+02:00February 16th, 2008|technology|94 Comments

In this tutorial I will show you how to disable the N95 camera red light non destructively [It has been confirmed that it works on 8GB version]. Beware! There are other methods around the web that suggest to cut wires and permanently damage your phone (here or here). This is not the case here, the method presented in this post is fully reversible. This is not an easy process and requires to disassemble your phone; tho it is not so difficult. It took me around 15 minutes in total. Here is what you need to complete the process (a paper trimmer or any kind of blade(surgical type) good enough to be able to cut with precision, a T6x50 precision screw driver, tape and a N95!)   Here are the steps to follow: To start with remove the battery cover and battery. Next remove the back cover of the [...]

linux & windows in greece

By |2016-01-12T21:11:29+02:00February 15th, 2008|technology|0 Comments

Zotero, Run-time Error ‘5891’

By |2016-01-12T21:11:29+02:00February 7th, 2008|technology|2 Comments

Following this discussion: http://forums.zotero.org/discussion/2052/runtime-error/ Here is a sample document with the error (docx, doc). To reproduce it just try to insert a citation on page 8 (On some pages it is not reproducible). I was not able to figure out what makes it happen, but there seems to be a bug on VB code somewhere... (word or zotero?) Regards, μο. p.s. here is the error screen and another doc file that I created:doc2 (see my first comment)

Video Compression

By |2016-01-12T21:11:29+02:00January 18th, 2008|technology, tutorial|2 Comments

This is a short introduction to Video Compression techniques by using free software tools. These include video codecs and VirtuaDub. Here is another Tutorial for HandBrake [>>] (easy to use, less technical jargon). What do we call Video Compression Video Compression refers to the methods for reducing the quantity of data used to represent video. It is a straight forward combination of image compression and motion compensation. To compress a video file we need two things: a video codec and a video editing tool. What is a codec A codec is short for COder/DECoder and is basically a small piece of software that is used to Encode and Decode video. In order to compress a video file you need to download and install the relevant codecs on your system. In our case, download and install a codec-pack that includes all of the codecs that will will need for the rest [...]

BenQ FP241W flicker problem + ATI

By |2016-01-12T21:11:56+02:00October 12th, 2007|technology, tutorial|1 Comment

[update] If your monitor version is older to March 2007 then forget this solution. Ask Benq to replace your monitor I found out that many people are experiencing this blackout problem when using the BenQ FP241W and the DVI connection. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M0Y8CMC5_qI The complexity of the problem arises because of the unpredictable behaviour of the many elements that are involved in the situation: graphics card, drivers, cables, monitor firmware, driver settings etc. Here I will try to outline a “method” that worked for me,.. relatively ok. 1. First of all, change the DVI cable. The original cable that comes with the BenQ monitor, is crap. In my case it produces, apart from the constant flickering, digital noise with visible dots(artifacts) in all black areas. This is basically a good sign that gives you some feedback regarding the quality of your cable. What I’ve done was to swap the BenQ DVI [...]

Nokia Map loader fails to install maps

By |2016-01-12T21:11:56+02:00October 9th, 2007|technology, tutorial|4 Comments

Many people get this annoying message when they try to download Nokia maps on their memory card: "Connection to the storage medium has been interrupted. Attach your storage medium and retry." Here is a workaround I discovered. To start with, connect your mobile and select the Mass Storage option, or remove your memory card and attach it to your computer. You basically have to mount the card as a drive. 1. Open a Windows File manager and go to the following directory: $System_rootDocuments and Settings$usernameLocal SettingsTemp On my winXP was: C:Documents and SettingsmodestosLocal SettingsTemp 2. Run Nokia Map Loader 3. Select the maps that you want and start downloading. 4. go back to the file manager and locate a folder named "download_temp". It only appears when downloading and if the installation fails then Nokia Map Loader deletes it. 5. So, before downloading finishes make the "download_temp" folder read-only. 6.Once Maploader [...]

By |2016-01-12T21:11:56+02:00September 21st, 2007|technology|0 Comments

I have recently discovered this forum: Mgmaps where the provide information for those interested to download and store maps for use in their GPS application. These include maps from GoogleMaps and Googlearth (satellite images). They also provide tools (e.g. gMapMaker) for downloading and merging map tiles as well as calibrating and building poster-like images and OziExplorer .map files.
