The International Conference and Summer School on Extended Arts (XARTS) is an academic initiative that examines the integration of art, technology, and design. Established in 2013 by the Department of Product and Systems Design Engineering at the University of the Aegean, XARTS provides a platform for scholars, artists, and technologists to explore and develop innovative artistic practices employing new media technologies. The upcoming XARTS2025 is scheduled for 21–28 June 2025 in Syros, co-organised with the Ionian University and the University of the Peloponnese, within the framework of the research project IMAGINE MOCAP, funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. In 2009, Volkswagen launched "The Fun Theory", an initiative demonstrating how interaction design can drive behavioural change by making everyday activities enjoyable. The campaign, which aimed to promote Volkswagen's BlueMotion Technologies, aligned with principles of human-computer interaction (HCI) and gamification, showcasing how interactive technologies and design interventions can enhance user engagement and encourage positive habits. Interaction Design and the Fun Theory Interaction design (IxD) focuses on crafting experiences that facilitate meaningful interactions between users and systems. By leveraging playful, engaging, and intuitive interfaces, interaction designers aim to influence human behaviour in a positive way. The Fun Theory campaign served as an experiment in persuasive design, proving that fun and interactivity can nudge people toward healthier, safer, and more sustainable behaviours. The campaign used sensor-based interfaces, auditory and visual feedback, and gamification to transform mundane actions into interactive experiences. Each experiment demonstrated how user engagement with interactive technologies can reinforce positive [...]
PACT Scoping Technique / Analysis: A Human-Centered Design Framework The PACT (People, Activities, Contexts, Technologies) scoping technique is a fundamental framework in human-centered design (HCD) that helps designers analyse and understand the key elements of interactive systems. By breaking down the components of design into four core elements—People, Activities, Contexts, and Technologies—PACT provides a comprehensive structure for evaluating the interactions between users and technology. This article explores the PACT framework, its components, and how it supports designers in creating meaningful and effective interactive experiences. Components of PACT Analysis 1. People The "People" component emphasises understanding the users of a system. This involves gathering information about their characteristics, needs, behaviours, skills, motivations, and limitations. By gaining insight into the diverse user base, designers can ensure that the interactive systems are accessible and inclusive. Personas and empathy maps are often used tools to represent user characteristics within this component. Understanding people means [...]

The 8th International Workshop on Information and Knowledge in the Internet of Things (IKIT 2023) in conjunction with the 23rd International Conference on Computational Science and Its Applications (ICCSA 2023) will be held on July 3 - 6, 2023 in collaboration with the National Technical University of Athens and University of the Aegean, Athens, Greece. Internet of Things (IoT) is currently one of the most challenging areas of the Internet, enabling communication and ubiquitous computing between global citizens, networked machines and physical objects, providing a promising vision of the future integrating the real world of knowledge agents and things with the virtual world of information. IoT is seen as a network of trillions of agents and machines that communicate with each other, being a profound technological revolution, which is the current reality and the future of computing and communications, supported by a dynamical technological evolution in many fields, from wireless [...]
The Workshop León & Madrid (Spain) | May 2-4, 2023 From Information to Insights: Beyond AI, from Information to Knowledge to Sustainability https://www.glossalab.org/glossalab-en/GlossaLAB_Workshop_2023 The dense and pervasive web of information technologies connecting people and sensors is constantly turning information into actions and creating extraordinary opportunities in a historical circumstance we designate as the "information age". At the same time, current technological and societal endeavours shows, on the one hand, that the benefits of big data and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based approaches are very uneven in scope and, on the other hand, that the key question of our time is how to master information to trigger appropriate actions and "insights" for the benefit of individual and collective lives. This problem is actually twofold: on the one hand, we should better understand information in its multiple aspects and contexts of application; on the other hand, we need to cope with the enormous flow of [...]
